Introduction
In 1958, the famous dinghy designer, Uffa Fox was asked to design
the Pegasus, and was given a brief to:-
"Design the best 14ft water-line dinghy you can. A stable
fast thoroughbred, quick to plane and a boat, which does not destroy
itself by its own speed when planing. Spare no time or thought
to making it the best 14ft dinghy in the world"
Uffa Fox rose to the challenge and the result is the Pegasus,
which at the time proved to be one of the best performing dinghies
around. Modern designs are now very different in concept, and the
high performance ones are certainly capable of speeds unheard of
in the early 1960's.
As a fan of Uffa Fox designs I was interested to see the Pegasus
at the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association's Regatta at
Roadford Lake. After checking out the CVRDA's website I came across
the Pegasus site and found the following advert.
Pegasus 18 - Athene All wood Pegasus, complete with spars,
sails and equipment. Hull has suffered from "Hog Rot" and
damaged section has been removed pending repair. Free to a good
home!
A few emails later and I was visiting Andy Hayes, the class chairman
and after a couple of hours talking about boats I was the owner
of Pegasus 18, Athene.
Athene was built in about 1956 by Eric Stanton, a PE
teacher from Cheshire as was sailed in school regattas by school
pupils.
She was lost and recovered whilst Eric was sailing her through "The
Swellies" on the Menia Straights she was taken down by a whirl
pool and re appeared at Beamaris the following day minus here rig
hence she now has a metal mast.
