{"id":218,"date":"2020-01-12T21:35:44","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T21:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/?p=218"},"modified":"2020-01-15T10:34:37","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T10:34:37","slug":"how-to-rib-removal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/2020\/01\/12\/how-to-rib-removal\/","title":{"rendered":"How to: Rib removal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With over 90 ribs to replace I soon developed a routine for removing a rib and fitting a new one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tools needed to remove a rib are pretty simple, a hammer, some punches and a couple of pairs of pincers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_7992-scaled-e1578865749660-1024x734.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The large pincers are used to crush the old rib. There are 26 nails used to fix the rib, basically the nails are hammered through the plank and rib, then the end of the nail has been bent over. The ribs are rebated into the keel. When I take the ribs out I leave a small piece near the keel. Unlike all the other nails, the fixing on the rib end through the keel has a rove on it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8015-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-260\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To get this one out requires finding the rove, a quick scrape exposes the copper rove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8016-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This needs to be drilled out, a centre punch helps to make an indentation to stop the drill bit from slipping<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8020-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-262\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It can then be drilled out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8024-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-263\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rove comes off after a few seconds of drilling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8026-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-264\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the rove removed the nail can be knocked through and removed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8038-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-266\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the nail removed all that is left to do is remove the small piece of rib that is rebated into the keel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8043-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-269\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8045-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-270\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With all the rib and nails removed a couple of coats of paint stripper are applied and the new rib can be fitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pegasus18.com\/zenith\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_8074-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-276\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With over 90 ribs to replace I soon developed a routine for removing a rib and fitting a new one.
